Bear Grylls and the Easter story

Bear Grylls has a new book which explores the Easter Story and it is called The Greatest Story Every Told. Find out why he said it was harder to write than climbing Mouth Everest!

Who is Bear Grylls?

Bear Grylls is a survival expert, adventurer, author and TV host. At 23 he was one of the youngest climbers ever to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He is an Honorary Colonel to the Royal Marines Commandos as well as being the Honorary Colonel to the British Army Foundation college. He is the first ever Chief Ambassador to the World Scout Organization, representing a global family of some fifty seven million Scouts.

His military career in the Territorial Army was cut short after a near-fatal parachuting accident. His parachute failed at 16,000 feet and three of his vertebrae were broken. Miraculously, he survived one of the highest recorded falls without a functioning parachute.

He is famous for his extreme adventure TV shows Running Wild with Bear Grylls, where he takes some of the world’s best-known stars on incredible adventures. From Julia Roberts and Roger Federer, to Will Ferrell and Kate Winslet…and even an iconic adventure with Prime Minister Modi of India.

Bear’s life motto is courage, kindness . . . and never give up! And he has been very open about his Christian faith: “Faith is the most freeing and empowering, raw, wild adventure you’ll ever go on.”

The Easter Story

The Bible can be quite hard to read and we don’t all know the full story. As Bear Grylls said, ‘we know stories but we don’t always know the whole story.’ HIs  He was a warrior, not the Jesus meek and mild, liberal sanitised, Christmas-version. Hardcore…and yet a perfect model for humility, love, leadership, friendship.

We all experience the Easter story in our own lives too. As Bear Grylls said “all God’s callings have a birth, a death, a resurrection”. Understanding how the Easter story relates to your own life with its challenges and victories brings more insight and faith.

‘It is the greatest story ever told. It’s not could be or maybe. If this is true, it changes everything.’

The Greatest Story Ever Told

The Greatest Story Ever Told is a new book by Bear Grylls, which he said was harder to write than climbing Everest! In this book, he retells the Easter story through the eyes of five people who knew Jesus best. He gives them old Jewish names as they would have had in first century Palestine: Maryam (his mother Mary ), Ta’om (Thomas), Shimon ( Simon Peter), Yohanan (friend) & Maryam of Magdala (Mary Magdalene).

One of the most striking things about his book is that he doesn’t change a single word Jesus said. He said this was more difficult than he thought and he used different translations to make sure he did not add any words or take any away. As he put it: “It’s his story”.
